Student Success Curriculum

Mandie Maxwell

At Shawnee State University, we want you to be successful. We want all students to reach their education goals, including earning a degree.

While we can't predict which students will be successful in college, we know that those who enter as freshmen with certain risk factors often struggle with college material. These students are more likely to fail courses, stop showing up for classes, and eventually drop out with college debt and no degree. When this happens, we all fail.

To help give students the extra support, skills, and attention they need to be successful, we have created a Success Curriculum that leads to a two-year degree that can be transitioned into a four-year degree in their chosen fields of study.

Who is enrolled in the Success Curriculum?

Students who are identified as needing support as they enter college are enrolled in the program.

How do I enter the program?

Based on your submitted ACT scores, you will automatically be enrolled into the Success Curriculum. This will become your path to success as a new college student. You will be notified by mail if you are admitted into the University College and the Success Curriculum.

How does the program work?

As a program participant, you will be accepted into the University College and enrolled in a two-year, associate degree program.

The first semester will be designed to get you started on the right foot. During this time, we will provide you with intensive intervention services and academic resources.

If you need developmental courses in English, reading, or math to become ready for college-level courses, we will provide you with small group tutoring, study groups, or both.

You will be assigned an advisor who will meet with you regularly during the semester to review and track your progress, assess any help that you may need, and connect you with resources. Your advisor will also meet with the University College Dean and the Dean of Students each month to discuss your success.

You will be enrolled in a First-Year Experience Course (UNIV 1101) and a Major/Career Exploration Course (UNIV 1105).

As part of the First-Year Experience, you will be required to attend one-hour seminars on topics designed to help you develop as a college student. Topics such as note-taking skills, time management, and life outside of the classroom will be offered.

At the end of the first semester, your advisor will evaluate your progress, academic goals, and participation. At this time, he or she will make a formal recommendation for you:
    • If, after the first semester, you have made significant progress, your advisor may recommend that you be transitioned into your desired major or program, whether it be a two-year or four-year program.

    • If you have made progress, but would benefit from continued services, your advisor may recommend that you continue with the Success Curriculum for a second semester.

  • If, after the first semester, you have a record of poor class attendance, poor grades (i.e. GPA 0.0), and poor participation, you will be dismissed from the program and from Shawnee State University. To re-enter Shawnee State University, you would need to demonstrate academic success elsewhere, such as community college or appeal to the SSU academic appeals committee.

Will participation in this program guarantee success?

No, but it greatly improves your chances. Your success is ultimately up to you. To be a successful college student, we urge you to take advantage of specialized programming, such as the Success Curriculum, and our other services including free tutoring, access to computer labs, and advising. We also encourage you to use the library services, and get involved with student life activities outside of the classroom as well. Most importantly, don't miss any classes and talk to your professor if you are having problems.

Why Success Curriculum?

We want you to be successful at Shawnee State University. The Student Success Curriculum will ensure that you receive the services, support, and direction that you need to become a successful college student and to succeed with your goals of earning a college degree.

The program is designed to provide one-on-one counseling and advising throughout the most critical first semester so you will have an expert with you to help you transition to college life, become familiar with the support services available to you, and advise you every step of the way. Your success is ultimately up to you. The Success Curriculum through the University College is here to support you.
