Live Webcast

Family members who can't join us on campus can watch a live webcast of the ceremonies online.


Rehearsal for Commencement will be at 12 pm on Friday, May 3 in Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. Rehearsal should last for approximately one hour. You do not need to wear your cap and gown. Coming to rehearsal is not mandatory, but you will receive valuable information that will help you with the process on graduation day.

Indoor Ceremony Schedules

There will be two ceremonies inside the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

First Ceremony: 10 am

The first ceremony will be at 10:00 am for students receiving the following degrees:

  • MSM Master of Science in Mathematics
  • MED Master of Education
  • BA Bachelor of Arts
  • BFA Bachelor of Fine Arts
  • BIS Bachelor of Individualized Studies
  • BS Bachelor of Science
  • BSE Bachelor of Science in Education
  • BSB Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

Second Ceremony: 2 pm

The second ceremony will be at 2:00 pm for students receiving the following degrees:

  • All Associate Degrees:
    • Associate of Arts
    • Associate of Applied Science
    • Associate of Science
    • Associate of Applied Business
    • Associate of Technical Study
  • BAT Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training
  • BSHS Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences
  • BSN Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Tickets for the severe weather ceremonies will be distributed through Friday, May 3 at 5 pm.

Each graduate will receive three tickets. Tickets can be picked up at the McKinley Box Office (10 am-5 pm) in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. Those who need additional tickets will be put on a waiting list once they have picked up their original three tickets.

Tickets must be picked up by the graduating student. They can not be picked up by anyone else. Tickets can be picked up until Friday, May 3 at 5:00 pm. Extra tickets for both indoor ceremonies are very limited. We ask that you make a plan with your family to determine who will be attending the ceremony if the Severe Weather plan is implemented.

Live Webcast

Family members without tickets can watch a live webcast of the ceremonies online. An overflow area will be held in the Flohr Lecture Hall and other campus locations to watch the webcast live for those who do not have tickets to watch the ceremony in the theater.

Commencement Reminders

Who is Eligible to Participate in Commencement?

Students completing their studies in Spring 2019 will be invited to the Spring Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 4, 2019.

Exit Counseling Sessions

All federal student loan borrowers are required to complete exit counseling at the time of graduation. If you were unable to attend Countdown to Commencement, you may complete the exit counseling online at www.studentloans.gov. A hold will be placed on your account if the exit counseling is not completed.

What do you wear?

Dress up, this is your college graduation! No shorts for men, please. No frilly collars. Ladies, please wear sensible shoes with low heels to avoid tripping when walking across the stage.

Honor Cords, Graduation Stoles, Cap and Gown Decorations

In addition to the traditional cap and gown regalia, specific students who have excelled academically are entitled to wear honor cords. Graduation stoles (sashes) may also be worn to signify achievement through or membership in college organizations in good standing with the University. Handicapped Parking

Handicapped parking will be located in Lot C and E close to the Vern Riffe Center. See the attached campus map for additional information.

Commencement Marshals

Student Commencement Marshals will be on hand to assist you or your family members before, during and after the ceremony. Please don't hesitate to ask them for help if needed. Representatives from the Shawnee State University Department of Public Safety will also be available for assistance if needed.


A photographer will take your picture as you are leaving the platform. You will receive a proof image in the mail later to see if you want to purchase the pictures. For questions about ordering, email service@gradimages.com. To ensure normal procession of the graduates, taking photos will not be permitted in the restricted areas near the platform beginning 15 minutes prior to the ceremony.

Graduation Checklist

  • Be sure all library books and borrowed materials are returned to SSU.
  • Be sure all fees are paid. You cannot receive a final transcript or your diploma if you owe anything to the University.
  • Order cap, gown and tassel from the Bookstore if you are participating in the commencement ceremony. Payment is due at the time the order is placed.
  • Inform your family and friends of the date of commencement.
  • Watch for an email to let you know when to pick up commencement regalia.
  • Be sure to do Exit Counseling before you graduate if you have ever had student loans.
