How does the Choose Ohio First Scholarship at Shawnee State work?

The Ohio Department of Higher Education has awarded Shawnee State University with $240,000 to be used for direct student scholarships to encourage women and African-American students to earn a degree in game design.

How do I apply for the scholarship?

Your application to Shawnee State University will automatically consider you for one of our merit-based scholarships and the Choose Ohio First scholarship. Complete the application, send us your transcript and ACT score by December 1, 2018 to be considered.

If I meet all qualifications, will I automatically receive the scholarship?

Awards will be given to qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis while funding is available. You will be notified of the award and asked to commit to Shawnee State by a certain date so we ensure that all funding will be used.

What is the value of the scholarship?

At least full-tuition.

Students who meet the requirements of SSU’s Choose Ohio First award (African-American student or female of any ethnicity) and qualify for one of Shawnee State’s merit-based scholarships, will be awarded twice the merit-based amount. If twice the amount doesn’t equal full-tuition, Shawnee State will make up the difference.

What if I earn the highest merit-based scholarship award, making my total scholarship more than full-tuition after it is doubled?

The Choose Ohio First scholarship will applied to tuition. Any SSU merit-based awards over full-tuition will be applied to housing, meals and book store charges, in that order. No refunds will be distributed.

Is the scholarship awarded every year?

This award is renewable every year, provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA, earns 27 credit hours per academic year and is majoring in one of SSU’s two game design programs.
