Student Teaching In China

Shawnee State University and South China Normal University Exchange Program

The SSU-SCNU exchange program was developed based on an English language immersion research project that has involved education faculty in both universities.

The premise of English immersion is to use English language as the instructional medium to teach content knowledge (science, social studies, etc.) in the PreK-12 classroom.

Dozens of PreK-12 schools in Guangdong and Xi’an provinces have joined the research project, which makes it possible to accept our teacher candidates to student teach in China.

Since 2008, three groups of SSU students have successfully completed their student teaching via this program. Two of them are now teaching full time and living in China. The program is expanding to accept applicants from the University of Cincinnati. The first UC group will teach in Guangzhou and Zhuhai (both cities in Guangdong province) in the Fall 2012 semester.

The program is fully recognized by the Ohio Department of Education and available for most licensure areas. Financial aid and scholarships are available for program participants. Students participating in the program enjoy free room and board and the opportunity to be fully immersed in the Chinese culture. Knowledge of the Chinese language is not required.
